Basic riding information of urban bus service includes route maps, time tables, transfer information, bus arriving time, etc. Proper riding information can make passengers more convenient while traveling and increase their incentives to use public transportation service. The objective of this study is to find the information content which is necessary during travel and the communication methods of this information.

The potential information contents which the passengers may need are deducted according different scenarios. The scenarios are classified by several attributes, that is users’ familiar about bus service, location, and time. 83 scenarios and corresponding potential information contents are defined in this study for further passenger survey. The survey was conducted to find the importance of information content at specific scenario from passengers’ point of view.

The results of the survey show that the alighting bus stop names and the path guides between bus stops and destination are the most important information for most of passengers. However, existing route maps do not provide that information for the passengers. A bus route/network map example is also developed in this study according the survey results and map design guide.
