Title A Study on the Taiwan’s Maritime Search and Rescue Scheme
Author Yang-Hong Chen
Summary Hundreds of maritime casualties occurred in Taiwan’s maritime search and rescue (SAR) region every year, and a high percentage for search and rescue services is also strongly required. Hence, an effective and efficient operation of the national search and rescue scheme is extremely essential. By Taiwan’s maritime distress case analysis, interviews and investigations into different SAR units, in this study we discover the problems of the current SAR scheme, which include inefficient mission coordination, unstable SAR force dispatch and poor SAR capability among Taiwan’s SAR units and its operational system. Recommendations are also proposed in the study for the government to improve SAR capability and to prevent further maritime distress.
