Summary An initial plan of “Biker Friendly Environment and Integrated Bike Lane Network Implement Plan from 2015 through 2018” was drawn by The Ministry of Transportation and Communication (MOTC). The objectives of the plan are based on the successful experience of “Bike Lane Network in the Eastern Region Demonstration Project”. The MOTC has proceeded with the implementation of West Region recreational bike lane network since 2015. With the
support from industrial, transportation, and educational sectors, a long term goal was set to establish Taiwan as a bicycle lifestyle island and bicycle riding country.
The MOTC has completed the "Cycling Route No.1” at the end of 2015 in collaboration with the Sports Administration of the Ministry of Education. In order to perfect the cycling-friendly routes in the country, the "Cycling Route No.1" will be followed by the "Cyclist Friendly Environment and Integrated Cycling Lane Network Implement Plan”, dividing Taiwan into five regions, as well as developing classic cycling routes. Each region has launched a
demonstration of cycling-friendly road network from 2016 to 2018.
The plan resulted in the completion of the Taiwan Cycling Routes website in 2015. The project is based on the “The First Year Plan of Ministry of Transportation and Communications for the Development of Demonstrate System and Marketing Services of Cycle Route” concept and proposed four dimensions (indigenous recognition, planning and engineering, business development with health/leisure/city marketing), and five major axes (user experience, government open data, marketing and promotion, globalization and data application) as the overall development guideline for the three-year project. The proposed tasks will be completed in phases each year, and it is hoped that bicycle culture can be integrated into daily life, and gradually transform Taiwan into a cycling country through transportation, education and culture efforts.
This year is the second year of the project which continued the expansion of map data of the classic road networks and site image database; we also worked to improve the user-friendliness of query on the Cycling Route No.1 and branch routes in the Taiwan Cycling Routes website and mobile APP, In terms of marketing, we chose the theme of "Taiwan is beautiful, so ride around the island at 15 km per hour!" to entice potential riders with the dream of riding around the island, making Taiwan Cycling Route as the first step for cycling trips around the island.
