Title The Study of Intelligent Vehicles for Highway Safety Inspection (I)—Understanding the Current Development of This Technology and Its Applicability
Dept Transportation Safety Division
Year 1996
Summary

The long term objective of this study is to develop an intelligent vehicle which has the capability of evaluating the service quality of highways. The application of this technology can not only provide drivers with a better driving environment, but also reduce accident rates on highways.

Many accidents on highways are caused by reasons related to the quality of highways. If those problems can be identified and solved earlier, then many unfortunately accidents can be prevented. Currently, technologies and facilities have been developed to investigate some individual problems. However, if we want to have a comprehensive highway safety inspection, we need lots of facilities and they will be very expensive. In addition, it takes time to analyze those data and get correct improvement suggestions. Nevertheless, according to the development of new automated survey technologies, those jobs are possible to be done by only a single facility and under a reasonable cost. In the Phase I study, the research team is trying to perform a detailed review of these new technologies and facilities.

By understanding the domestic demand and the self-development capability, this study has proposed some possible strategies for introducing this special technology to Taiwan. The cost and benefit evaluation associated with each strategy has also been done in this study. That information will be very valuable for people both in the fields of operation and research study.
