Dept IOT
Year 1999
Summary In order to cope with the economical crisis and to prepare for the millennium, the government has designated the Action Plan for Asia-Pacific Operation Center as the blueprint for the enhancement of Taiwan Area’s economic development and for the maintaining of Taiwan’s competitiveness in the international market. The development of CKS International Airport into Asia-Pacific Air Transportation Center will be one of the key programs in the Action Plan.

According to the world’s famous economical observers, North American, Europe, and the Asian-Pacific Region will become the three major regional economic entities in the future. Moreover, the Asia-Pacific Region will be the most important economic resource for the world. In this region, the Asian Chinese Economic Circle, which includes Taiwan, Hong Kong, Mainland China, and Singapore, will be the most important momentum for the world’s economic growth. The Taiwan Area is located in the point where the Northeastern Asia and Southeastern Asia intersect. That is to say, Taiwan is located in the most crucial point of the Asian-Pacific Region. Geographically, culturally, and economically speaking, the Taiwan Area does have a favorable chance of development. Consequently, the CKS International Airport does have the potential of becoming the Asian-Pacific Air Transportation Center.

And, during this process, timing is most important, especially recently other countries in this region, like Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand, the Philippines, and China, etc., are aggressively promoting their aviation businesses, busy building or expanding airports in order to become the Air Hub Center. This certainly has an enormous impact on our development of the CKS International Airport into Asia-Pacific Air Transportation Center. And, it is necessary that we investigate these major competing airports in the Asian-Pacific Region. Therefore, the Institute of Transportation has sponsored a program for the (Study of the Development Trends and the Analysis of Competitiveness of the International Airports in Asia-Pacific Region). The purpose was to quickly manage the development of the CKS International Airport through the collection and analyses of the basic qualifications and the trends for the development of the existing international airports and new airports. Furthermore, it was aimed to investigate the competitiveness of the major airports in the Asian-Pacific Region and their future trends for development.
