Title A Study of the Railroad Passengers' Preference on Long Holidays in the Taiwan Westcoast
Dept IOT
Year 1997
Summary In Taiwan, railroad has an extremely high demand during in long holiday periods. Traffic patterns in long holidays, such as average traveling distances, are apparently different as usual. To have a better train schedule for holiday travelers, the first step for Taiwan Railway Administration (TRA) is to better understand its customers' preference. Based on the concept of market separation, the study has divided the railroad passenger market during long holidays into three different sectors according to the traveling distances. Passengers in each sector are assumed to have different demand characteristics. Different traveling time, different departure time, and the availability of seat have been used as three basic factors to establish the decision function for travelers belonging to each sector. Questionnaires have been sent out to passengers in chosen train stations during two long holidays in 1997. The GCM model has been used to analyze the responses, a total of 27 models for three different classes of train service and three different market sectors have been calibrated. These preference models' results indicate that passengers in different market sectors have significant different preference to the expected service characteristics. For example, medium and long distance passengers are more sensitive to the change of traveling time, the availability of seat, and the class of service than short distance passengers. We hope that the passenger preference models can be used as important media for TRA to better schedule its service during holidays by catching its customers' preference. It is also hoped that results showing by model analyses can also be an important reference for TRA to better utilize its facilities.
