Title A Study on the Development of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) and Relevant Technologies
Dept IOT
Year 1998
Summary Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) are the systems that employ advanced electronics, telecommunications, information, control, and mechanics technologies to the operations of existing transportation systems in order to alleviate traffic and transportation problems. It aims to reduce traffic congestion and accidents, and to enhance transportation operational efficiency. Thus, the purposes of this research are to introduce the basic concepts of ITS and the relevant technologies applied to ITS, and to review the current development status about ITS both domestically and internationally. It is also hoped to demonstrate possible transportation benefits of implementing ITS through the description of several ITS showcase projects. The major contents of the prevailing research are: (1) the description of the contents and goals of ITS; (2) the analysis of ITS development status both in Taiwan and in the international community; (3) the manifestation of key ITS technologies; and (4) the demonstration of relevant ITS showcase projects.

As revealed in the research conclusions, most of the countries in the world systematically develop the required ITS scheme and projects that meet their local needs. Moreover, ITS are developed based on domestic industrial potentials and academic / research standards. It will also provide the incentives for relevant industrial sectors and generate employment opportunities. Therefore, the most important issues for the development and deployment of ITS in Taiwan are to propose an ITS master plan, and to provide a mechanism for public and private sectors participation, based on the unique traffic conditions and user needs in Taiwan. Through the joint efforts of both the public and the private sectors, it is anticipated that a clear picture for ITS development in Taiwan is reachable.
