Summary

Chinese New Year Holidays is the most important annual holiday and has the most significant pressure on transportation. The 2019 & 2022 Chinese New Year Holidays were 9-day continuous holidays from the day before New Year's Eve to the sixth day of the Lunar New Year. Although the holiday in 2022 was affected by COVID-19 and heavy rainfall, the freeway traffic volume was the lowest in recent years. Still, it can be regarded as a rigid travel demand during the Chinese New Year Holiday. Therefore, this study observes the changes in the characteristics of freeways, Taiwan railway and high-speed rail trips during the 2019 & 2022 Chinese New Year Holidays.

The relevant study results can be used as a reference for future management and decision-making for the Ministry of Transportation and Communications as well as the related traffic relief Agencies.
