Title Improved Inspection and Detection of Harbor Structures (1/4) - Discussion on Application of New-Emerging Technology to Inspection and Detection
Dept Transportation Technology Research Center
Year 2023
Month 3
Price 250
Summary

Ports are vast in area, with wharfs and breakwaters constantly in the environment of harsh ocean and unknown water below; so, routine inspections and inspections of harbor structures usually take a lot of manpower and time to carry out. At present, most inspections in the port area are primarily carried out manually, where inspection personnel perform routine inspection operations with the aid of instruments for detailed regular underwater inspection. Subject to limited manpower and budgets, problems occurring to many facilities cannot be dealt with in time. The present research explores the application of emerging technologies in the inspection and detection of harbor structures and analyzes the current maintenance management system, inspections and detections, as well as the criteria for determining deterioration, to improve the inspection and inspection of harbor structures. Thus, with the help of more efficient and informative method, maintenance managers can really perform the maintenance management systems and the maintenance management efficiency will be improved. RESEARCH RESULTS AND BENEFITS: 1. The system of maintenance management and the criteria for determining deterioration of subjects of inspection and test were explored. Maintenance management manuals were modified or revised in a rolling manner. Assistance was offered to maintenance managers in performing maintenance management systems and improving maintenance management efficiency. 2. Employment of emerging technologies helped perfecting inspection and testing operations, and in turn improved the effectiveness of maintenance and management of harbor structures. 3. Assistance was provided to Port of Taichung in clarifying the problems encountered in regular inspection of the breakwater and in improving the inspection method. APPLICATION AVAILABILITY: The results of the present research can be provided as reference and application for port administrations in performing the maintenance and management of harbor facilities such as wharves and breakwaters. The detecting methods adopted or recommended during the course of research, and the results can be provided as reference for Taiwan’s harbor administrations and engineering consultants, as well as for the Institute in follow-up research
