Title Typical Examples for road and Traffic Engineering Design in Mixed-Traffic Situation(1/4)
Dept Transportation Safety Division

Summary

Mixed traffic flow is a primary type of traffic flow in Taiwan. To enhance road safety in mixed traffic flow, this study makes suggestions and strategies for improvement. First, the study reviews previous research and relevant literature including accident analysis, improvement concept of traffic safety and new improved measures, etc. In order to verify the results of previous research projects, this study investigated the intersections of previous research and analysed the changes to accidents and conflicts before- and after- the changes. Previous research has established the example of intersection design and explored the design conditions of the type of motorcycle left-turning at the intersection. Therefore, this study analyses change of the accident in the intersections that allowed motorcycle leftturning directly in both Taipei and New Taipei City We then explored design deficiencies in the current situation to improve upon the design of direct-left turn for motorcycles. The current domestic traffic engineering design reference tool is not equipped to properly assess the impacts of traffic safety and accident patterns, and it is hard to propose an improvement plant for the specific type of traffic accidents at intersections. To address these issues, we aim to establish models of improved traffic enigeering designs for each accident in the intersections, and to compile into a summary of integrated design model of safety-oriented insersections.
