Summary

The Institute of Transportation proposed the “5G smart transportation digital nerve” research project development in 2021 in response to the global development trend of 5G information and communications technology and based on the digital governance concepts of digital transformation and digital twin. The “Constructing the 5G Smart Transportation Digital Nerve (1/2)-Functional
architecture discussion and system planning” (hereinafter “preliminary project”) was also completed. The “Constructing the 5G Smart Transportation Digital Nerve (2/2)-System Prototype Development and Verification Implementation” (hereinafter the “project”) was carried out using the preliminary project’s research results as the basis. Initially, the development of the 5G smart transportation digital nerve prototype system was completed. The traffic prediction model library, a knowledge base related to public transportation management, and other conceptual verification implementations were included. Furthermore, real-time traffic information collection and the implantation field were combined to present 3D visualization via digital twin technology, thereby developing the core technology of urban smart mobility and innovative applications and services.
In this project, opinions from all sides were extensively gathered based on shared site equipment, signal controller information, vehicle detector information, changeable message signs (CMS), automatic vehicle recognition information, and so on. Version 3.0 of the Communication Protocol was also modified and updated. Simultaneously, metropolitan area light rail and emergency vehicle
operations, transportation management center management and control in a vehicle-to-everything setting, site equipment device-todevice (D2D), information security, and other additional requirements were incorporated. The urban transportation control communication protocol is hoped to keep up with the times. In addition, to address the 5G communications environment and the
challenge of multiple smart transportation application needs, the smart signal control system for emergency rescue vehicles was chosen for verification and implementation. The implementation demonstration site in this project included technical verifications and implementations on such issues as vehicle positioning precision, communications technology and protocol, emergency rescue vehicle
rea-time location release, and so on, based on the premise that smart signal system planning for emergency rescue vehicles and conceptual test results were completed in the preliminary project. In addition, implementation experiences were summarized in order to propose a reference manual on the smart signal control system for emergency rescue vehicles.
