| Summary | Although injury is the main consequence among the victims of traffic accidents in Taiwan, the competent authority responsible for traffic safety cannot totally control the situation of injury of traffic accidents, including their severity, patterns, outcomes and other useful variables, because of the fragmentation nature of the information collected. Therefore, the establishment of a primary database of injuries from traffic accidents has become recognized as an important issue in order to provide resources for the competent authority to improve traffic safety in our society. Our study will discuss this issue from the perspectives of policy-making, practical implementation, and expert and academic opinions, to re-evaluate the definitions and data collection methods of injury severity from traffic accidents. We will perform promotion and education in order to implement the revised versions of injury definitions to the executive units and update the documentation of injuries from traffic accidents by police officers, paramedics and emergency medical providers. We will also focus on important issues of injury of traffic accident which have significant influence on the injury control in our country. Useful data will be collected to estimate the impact of this issue on public health. The primary database established by our study will become a valuable tool for the competent authority and academics to utilize for policy planning and further academic study. |
