Title A Preliminary Project of Development in Fuel-saving On-Board Units Applied in Public Passenger Carriers
Dept Transportation Operations and Management Division
Year 2019
Month 6
Price 0
Summary This is a preliminary project of the "A Study of Development in Fuel-Saving On-Board Units Applied in Public Transport – With a case Study of Buses, aiming to gain a further understanding of Fuel-Saving On-Board Units (OBU) and potential other innovative applications in the future. The study will also be helpful in defining future research goals and clarifying outcomes.
The smart fuel-saving OBU can be combined with GPS positioning, sensors, OBDII, vehicle cameras, 3G/4G network connectivity, and other monitoring equipment to monitor and analyze driving behavior and fuel -saving application, the results of wghich can also be applied in future education and training. Some operators in Taiwan already use fuel -saving technology , consisting of modules installed in their vehicles to score driving behavior and offer feedback to the bus drivers to adjust their driving behavior. This has been proven to save about 2% to 5% fuel consumption.
A conference with experts and scholars concluded that analysis of driving behavior such as driving speed and gear shifting, and the application of such information for feedback and training are key factors to achieve fuel savings. With regard to the content and mechanisms of technical regulations and certifications it was suggested that a demonstration project to validate the efficacy of OBUs would be helpful in creating references to promote this technology going forward.
