Title The Test and Research Regarding the Relationship Between Braking Distance and Vehicle Speed
Dept Transportation Safety Division
Year 1997
Summary 1) This proposal is a succeeding project from "study on Review, Modification, and Test of the Relationship Between Braking Distance and Vehicle Speed" in FY 94 and "Vehicle Braking Performance Test and Analysis of the Influnced Parameters for Braking Distance" in FY 95. The purpose is to examine the suitability of the existing table of "the relationship of braking stopping distance, vehicle speed and road friction coefficient."

2) This proposal initially set up the modified corresponding table referring to international research attainment, then confirmed its accuracy by the results of planned vehicle road braking tests of two popular domestic vehicles (passenger car and van). The road test conditions of braking test combine the following states: dry/wet road surfaces on new/old asphalt paved road, including two kinds of weight distribution - light and heavy load/G.V.W. (gross vehicle weight), and test speeds of 30, 40, 50,....., 100 km/h.

3) The table corresponding to vehicle speed used in traffic accident is based on the formular V2=2aL=2fgL. Namely, it is the way to estimate vehicle initial speed after deciding drag factor(f) and length of brake skid marks(L).

4) This proposal also includes relative characteristics of air brake system and motorcycle brake system, in order to investigate the setup of corresponding table relevant to these motor vehicles.
