Title The Study of Installation and Usage of Aid Facilities for Persons with Disabilities to Take Public Road Carriers
Dept Transportation Safety Division
Year 1997
Summary The Institute began to implement the Barrier-free Transportation Demonstration Project of Modifying Vehicles and Providing Services for Persons with Disabilities in 1995. In the project, vehicles were equipped with aid facilities for persons with disabilities in the fixed-route and specialized dial-a-ride barrier-free transportation services, besides the privileged taxis. The purpose of this research is to find the problems of installation and usage of aid facilities when persons with disabilities take these vehicles, and to provide suggestions for future improvement.

The wheelchair lift, the wheelchair storage space, the devices to fix a wheelchair, as well as stairs equipped on a vehicle are selected as the objects in the research. For these objects, the questionnaire is designed according to the major criteria, i.e., reliability, convenience, safety, comfort, economy, and operation time. In addition, the operators, drivers, persons with disabilities and common passengers of fixed-route or specialized dial-a-ride barrier-free transportation services provided in Taipei city, Kinmen county and Miaoli county are visited or given the questionnaire to assess their comments and suggestions.

The assessment from persons with disabilities and common passengers are very good. Only few people have negative image to the usage of these aid facilities. Finally, a summary of the survey results, the problems of installation, the usage of these aid facilities, and the suggestions to improve the software and hardware of them are provided.
