Title Adaptability on Light Rail Transit System in Taiwan
Dept IOT
Summary Following the former IOT report entitled (A Feasibility Study on the Use of Light Rail Transit System in Taiwan Area) dated 1997, the purpose of this project is to investigate the technical criteria and thresholds of the application of the Light Rail Transit (LRT) system in Taiwan. Focusing on technical aspects, comparisons will be made regarding differences among Taiwan metropolitan areas and foreign cites where LRT are adopted. It is intended to provide technical evaluation references on the introduction LRT system into Taiwan. With these references, the project analyzes a real local case to validate the evaluation process and the adaptability.

There are five primary outputs from the project:

(1)Definition of LRT as well as the correlation of LRT with the urban environment;

(2)Technical characteristics of LRT and evolution of the LRT concept;

(3)Evaluation guidelines and thresholds of adapting LRT in Taiwan, including transportation needs, system performances, civil work and system type, investment, operating costs, system maturity, technology development, social achievement, and public acceptance;

(4)Planning of principles for the adaptation of the LRT in Taiwan, including urban social and economic characteristics, characteristics of urban physical environment, principles of operation and maintenance, principles for safe implementation of semi-exclusive and non-exclusive LRT into city street;

(5)A case study of applying LRT in Shih-Lin area of Taipei, as an examination of the proposed LRT evaluation guidelines and planning principles.
