Title Vehicle Braking Performance Test and Analysis of the Influential Parameters for Braking Distance
Dept Transportation Safety Division
Year 1996
Summary

The main purpose of this project is to investigate the related influential parameters of vehicle braking distance. This project investigates the following parameters: 1.vehicle grades (1,300, 1,600, 2,000c.c.), driver behavior (one-step completely lock braking type and two-step gradually lock braking type), tire width (175/70 R13, 185/60 R14, 205/60 R14), and braking system (front disc and rear drum, four-wheel disc).

From the series of vehicle performance tests simulating emergency braking, the effects and results of the above different parameters for braking distance are concluded. First, regarding the results of the difference between the one-step completely lock braking type and the two-step gradually lock braking type, it is found that the former braking type is better than that of the latter braking type under 90 km/h. Second, for the effects of the two different braking systems, it is found that the differences of both of braking distances are under 10%. The third result is that the differences of braking distance are under 10% among three kinds of tire width. The fourth result is that the braking distance effects of three vehicles are not obviously different.
