Title A study on the enhancement of the global container shipping network model
Dept Transportation Engineering, Maritime and Air Transport Division
Year 2018
Month 5
Price 210
Summary This research extends a previous study to include more considerations into the network model, and enhances the model’s ability, in order to obtain more in-depth analytical results. Scenario analysis suggested that East-West global services will be enhanced following the widening of the Panama Canal; the New Asian-Europe land bridge will have little impact on the global maritime container transportation network; Kaohsiung port is more sensitive than the world to global economical swings; lower port fee has little help to Kaohsiung Port’s attraction; the growth of ASEAN countries will have profound impact on Kaohsiung, especially if and when the ASEAN countries upgrade their port facilities; polar passage is unlikely to attract heavy container traffic; the Kra canal will re-route some container shipping volumes away from the Malacca Strait, and the Nicaragua Canal will not offer shortcuts for sailing distance.
