| Summary | The safety of motorcycles is an important issue of highway traffic in Taiwan. Mixed traffic flow is also a common type of traffic flow in intersections. This study will first conduct a thorough review of relevant literatures, followed by analysis of traffic engineering design factors and issues of intersection design. Also, the causes and characteristics of accidents will be analyzed based on the data of traffic accidents across the entire country. After proposing improvement measures, this study will make a complete analysis about safety and efficiency of the above measures. Finally, focusing on the current mixed traffic flow environment, this study will establish the comprehensive procedure of design improvements to prevent intersection traffic accidents, and the experimental study of safety-oriented intersections. The innovative improvement measures were developed to solve the patterns of accidents that can’t be addressed by existing road infrastructure. After the improvement measures have been developed, we will perform safety and efficiency analysis and amendments of these measures. According to the analysis of the types of accidents and collisions conducted at pilot intersection studies of the previous year, it was found that the common collision types were closely related to the geometric layout of intersections and signal controls. By adjusting the yellow and all red signal time, improving the markings or signs, set diversion markings, lane based waitting zone, etc, intersection accidents may be reduced by providing effective guidances and lowering of traffic conflicts. |
