Summary (1) The 16th Project of Accident-prone Locations Improvement in Taiwan Area

This project is conducted by the Institute of Transportation (IOT) under the Improvement Program for Traffic Order and Safety, which is in response to a decree issued by the Executive Yuan. Through a computer analysis of the 1997 accident data in Taiwan area provided by the Ministry of Transportation and Communications Information Center, the study identified the accident-prone locations throughout the Taiwan area. To have a better understanding about those locations, field study teams were arranged. The team members include the officers from the Road Traffic Safety Commission, the IOT, the Provincial Department of Transportation, the Taiwan Highway Bureau, and the police and engineering offices of local governments. After a thorough discussions with the team members, the IOT has proposed an improvement plan for each accident-prone location. This year, totally 228 accident-prone locations have been identified. The total cost to improve those locations is NT 55,227,576 and the average cost for each location is approximately NT 240,000.
