Title A study on rural bicycle road system and its network connection around Taiwan

Summary The current intercity highway system is mainly based on single-lane, two-way two-lane and two-way four-lane roads. Based on the development experience of domestic and international bicycle transportation, this study proposes that it can be used as a bicycle riding space including mixed lanes and slow lanes (including motorcycle and slower vehicle priority lanes), as well as bicycle lanes.
The conflict between bicycles and other vehicles is mainly due to traffic flow conflict caused by the excessive speed difference between the bicycle and motor vehicles, the conflict between temporary parking and cycling lanes, and turning traffic flow conflict at the intersection. This study proposes that the concept of safety hierarchy should be used in conjunction with traffic engineering techniques to moderately reduce the speed difference between the lanes and the pattern of steering conflicts. It also proposes the six planning and design principles for road bike transportation systems. Based on this principle, the study proposes planning and design methods to improve the safety of bicycle riding in the following scenarios: two-way, dual vehicle lanes; two-way, four-vehicles
lanes; slow lane near bus stops; bicycle lanes adjacent to bus stops; slow lanes nearing intersection, and bicycle lanes nearing intersection.
