| Summary | Besides high economic effect, flexibility, low energy consumption, non-pollution and door-to-door transportation mode, bicycle transportation is suitable for short trip transport or a feeder mode to other transportation modes. Therefore, bicycle is a healthy and environment-friendly transportation mode. After the completion of (The Feasibility Study of Bikeway network System and Preliminary Planning) research project in 1997, this year the Institute of Transportation (IOT) selected Tainan, a middle scale city in southern Taiwan, to be the bikeway planning demonstration area to promote traffic safety, effectiveness and environment protection. The purpose of this research project is to provide a demo to other cities for the building of balanced, tranquil and comprehensive urban roadway transportation system in the future. The contents of this research include the selection of implementation location and routes (networks), the preliminary design of infrastructure, the estimation of budgets, cost-effective analysis and establishment of implementation procedure and plan. Finally, the results provide a reference to Taiwan City government for the detailed design and construction with the financial subsidy from the Environmental Protection Administration (EPA) of the Executive Yuan. |
