On January 5, 2025, the Institute of Transportation(IOT), Ministry of Transportation and Communications(MOTC), celebrated its 40th anniversary. The celebratory events, themed “A New Era of Sustainability: 40 Years of Excellence,” took place on Friday, January 3, 2025. Former directors-general and guests from various sectors gathered to commemorate this historic milestone. Minister Chen Shih-Kai of MOTC addressed the occasion, stating that IOT’s role as a professional think tank has become an indispensable part of Taiwan’s transportation policy development. Adhering to the principles of “professionalism, innovation, and evidence-based research,” the IOT assists in implementing numerous groundbreaking policies. The Minister further emphasized the IOT's roles as the “guardian of transportation safety,” contributing to a reliable and intelligent transportation safety protection network; the “promoter of sustainable transportation,” proposing forward-thinking and feasible sustainable transportation action plans to achieve net-zero carbon emissions; the “engine of innovation in smart transportation,” accelerating the development of a more efficient and people-oriented transportation system; and the “professional consultant in transportation policy administration,” actively fostering comprehensive communication with relevant bureaus and departments. The IOT, by utilizing scientific data and factual evidence, serves as a highly effective advisor to the MOTC.
IOT Director-General Lin Chi-Kuo stated that this 40th anniversary marks both a historical milestone and a starting point for future endeavors. The IOT will uphold the spirit of “professional leadership in the pursuit of excellence,” expanding its expertise and innovative capacity to address the challenges posed by increasingly diverse and complex environmental changes, both domestically and internationally. Furthermore, the IOT will proactively engage in and assume responsibility for driving progress and sustainability in Taiwan’s transportation development.
A commemorative video featuring well-wishes from various stakeholders was shown during the event. Deputy Minister Lin Kuo-Hsien presented Contribution Awards to the former directors-general in recognition of their outstanding contributions to transportation development, and Director-General Lin Chi-Kuo presented the Transportation Excellence Contribution Award to Former Consultant Chang Tung. Meanwhile, Director-General Lin outlined the future visions , research and development roadmap for the IOT. The “Transportation Research Pilot Pavilion” inauguration ceremony and the “40 Years of Excellence” special exhibition were also held, providing an opportunity to reflect on the history of transportation in Taiwan, connect generations of transportation professionals, foster consensus, and collaborate on a forward-thinking future.
To further commemorate the 40th anniversary, a Cycling Team Consensus Camp was held on Sunday, January 5, 2025. Led by Director-General Lin Chi-Kuo, supervisors and colleagues participated in the cycling trip, demonstrating a commitment to green transportation and embodying the concept of low-carbon sustainable living. This event capped off a series of 40th-anniversary activities, including experience sharing, consensus building, team cohesion strengthening, and ongoing promotion of IOT initiatives.
Looking ahead, the IOT will continue to serve as a professional think tank, aligning with the MOTC’s four policy priorities. These priorities include: “Implementing transportation safety and people-oriented values,” ensuring safer and more welcoming journeys; “Leading transportation technology and industrial innovation,” integrating AI and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to create smarter transportation experiences for the public; “Creating a convenient and resilient transportation network,” providing equitable access to transportation for everyone, regardless of location; and “Promoting net-zero carbon emissions and moving towards environmental sustainability,” promoting energy conservation and carbon reduction to achieve harmony between transportation and the environment.
The IOT will collaborate with industry, government, academia, and research sectors to forge a new chapter in Taiwan’s transportation.
