E-bus Smart Charging Management System Project Institute of Transportation, MOTC wins 2024 6th ESCI Best Practices Awards Ceremony Smart Transport-Gold Award

       The Institute of Transportation, MOTC (IOT), entered the 2024 6th Energy Smart Communities Initiative (ESCI) competition with the proposal theme “smart and sustainable e-bus solutions: shaping the future of energy management in smart cities”. On July 5, 2024, it was announced that the Institute of Transportation (IOT) won the gold award in the “APEC ESCI Smart Transportation category.” The APEC organizer invited the Institute of Transportation (IOT) to send delegates to the 2024 APEC-ESCI award ceremony, which is held in Lima, Peru on August 13. On behalf of Chinese Taipei, Director-general Lin Chi-Kuo, the Institute of Transportation (IOT) led the delegation to the venue to accept the award  and to share Taiwan’s project vision and successful experience with the 13 APEC economies.
Institute of Transportation supports the Ministry of Transportation and Communications in promoting E-bus, and its smart solutions have received international recognition.
        The APEC Energy Smart Communities Initiative (ESCI) competition was first proposed in 2010 by former US President Barack Obama and Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan. The Asia-Pacific economies were invited to participate in the initiative through propositional competition and knowledge sharing, with the goal of jointly achieving sustainable development, net-zero transformation, and other objectives. The APEC-ESCI Award was evaluated by the APEC ESCI evaluation committee, which was chaired by United States Department of Energy’s PNNL senior advisor and scientist doctor Cary Bloyd. The judges were nominated by members of the APEC energy working group. 
3+1 Innovative concepts Has Won the Favor of Domestic and Foreign Smart Transportation and Energy Experts
        The Institute of Transportation (IOT) leverages (1) Through digital technology and innovative concepts, assist the Ministry of Transportation and Communications in expediating the promotion of the “full electrification of city buses by 2030” policy; (2) The government’s open data, charging standards, and sharing economy concepts have made charging piles have made charging piles partially accessible to other electric vehicles. This can effectively improve the current situation of insufficient charging piles for electric vehicles in Taiwan and alleviate anxiety about EV travel mileage.; (3) In light of the vision of using over ten thousand electric buses as mobile energy storage units, by storing the remaining power during off-peak hours when power is scarce, the power demands of regional power grids and critical infrastructure (such as hospitals and police stations) can be met. Furthermore, the resilience of smart city energy management can be improved, and the +1 concept can be promoted. The work environment can be improved using technology, promoting gender equality and protecting labor rights. The aforementioned 3+1 innovative concepts are the keys to the IOT winning favor with international transportation and energy experts, standing out from the rest, and winning the gold award at the current APEC international competition.
Extended promotion and applications in all parts of Taiwan; gradual duplication and spread in the Asia-Pacific region.
       The IOT has developed a digital, innovative value-added service for managing e-bus smart charging that can be scaled for global use and promotion. Currently, in addition to its use in multiple e-bus charging stations in Taipei City, New Taipei City, and Taichung City, governments and industrial representatives from Southeast Asia and South America are actively scheduling technology visits and gradually importing project results. This project uses the universal charging standard (CCS1). AIoT technology enables highly customized, innovative solutions. It has emerged as the primary power source for accelerating vehicle electrification in the Asia Pacific regions. The outcomes have been widely promoted and implemented in Taiwan, with a gradual spread throughout Asia Pacific region. This has facilitated international outputs in related industries.
