Summary Based on the requirements of the Taiwan Railway Administration (TRA) to develop a basic database for railway systems and facilities, this project revises, extends, and improves the findings of the “Establishment of a Basic Database for Railway Systems and Facilities” proposed in 2011. Concerning the concept of the proposed railway decision-making support system (RDSS), the following three major subsystems were included, specifically, a shared core database, an automated data bridging system, and a special designed GIS system for railway facilities. Many data sources in TRA have been tested to connect to RDSS by using the proposed data bridging system. These data sources included ticket records, centralized traffic control (CTC) system records, automatic train protection (ATP) system records, train services time table, and assets and materials. With this data bridging system, many isolated island-style databases that currently exist in TRA were integrated into RDSS, forming a cross-enterprise database that serves as the only data “bridge”. On the other hand, a dedicated GIS system was designed for railway facility management. Data view concept was applied in this GIS system and a java program with a GUI editor was implemented. With this program, all railway facilities in TRA are digitized to facilitate facility-related decision support systems, such as timetable planning system or a facility maintaining system.
