Summary | To facilitate the analysis of the traffic operations on freeways and rural two-lane highways, the Institute of Transportation (IOT), Ministry of Transportation and Communications initiated a three-phase research effort in 2013 to develop simulation models.,The first two phases produce two versions of Traffic-on-Grade (TGS) simulation models, one for analyzing traffic flows on freeways that are free of the influence of ramp junctions and the other for simulating the uninterrupted traffic flows on rural two-lane highways.
This report details the work performed in the final phase to integrate and enhance the models developed in the previous phases. The resulting model, referred to as the 2015 Highway Traffic Systems Simulation (2015HTSS) Model, can simulate both traffic flows on segments with or without ramps or intersections. Moreover, it can be easily enhanced for simulating the operations of other types of highway facilities. The development of the 2015HTSS model encompasses the following tasks: (1) synthesize field data for model calibration; (2) develop logic for simulating the traffic operations at freeway ramp junctions; (3) develop logic for simulating the traffic operations of intersections on rural two-lane highways; and (4) calibrate and test the model based on field data. Instructions on the preparation of 2015HTSS Model input files are included in an appendix of this report. |
