Summary The present study evaluated the impact that real-time bus information systems have on passengers’ riding times using long-term public bus user behavior survey data. The analysis period of this study is 7 years starting from the complete deployment of the Kaohsiung City Real-time Bus Arrival Information System, which is comparatively longer than other relevant studies. We adopt the survival analysis technique to evaluate the influence of the real-time bus information system on riding duration. In addition, the present study employs logistic regression to analyze passenger characteristics and gain a better understanding of the major user groups. Findings suggest that realtime bus information systems can extend riding duration by 0.19 years and introduce significant benefits. Moreover, the primary user groups of real-time bus information systems are females, those who are highly educated and young people. The study can not only provide analyses that are beneficial to reinforcing academic foundation, but also help relevant authorities to organize more effective plans when promoting real-time bus information services in the future.
