Summary Train scheduling is one of the core activities in planning railway operations. The resulting timetable will significantly influence the follow-up plans, such as train utilization, crew scheduling, and train dispatching, etc. Currently the practice of train scheduling is not very efficient, and research on this topic is rare. Therefore, it is urgent and necessary to allocate resources in systematic research regarding train scheduling problems. The study takes the most complicated system in Taiwan (i.e., Taiwan Railway Administration, TRA) to be the research subject. Through the literature review on train scheduling software and methodologies, the study evaluated the development of train scheduling systems around the world and then proposed a database framework for train scheduling parameters. This study also collected TRA parameters in order to build a database system which may be used in the future development of train scheduling models and systems for TRA.
