To meet the need of Taipei Harbor’s future development, the breakwaters will be extended to provide sufficient harbor basin for ship operation. The flow field nearby Taipei Harbor is quite complicated and is mainly influenced by northeast monsoon as well as bathymetry. Hence, a numerical simulation for the prediction and analysis of flow field for ship motion is needed. The flow field of the present condition and different layouts of extension in the future are also simulated to look for an optional solution for future construction design and ship maneuvering of Taipei Harbor.

In this study a numerical model developed by Hsu et al. (1992,2002) was implemented to simulate the flow field around Taipei Harbor. Reasonable boundary conditions were set up on the basis of tidal stations. The numerical model was validated and model coefficients were calibrated through available measured data. To achieve a more accurate resolution and computational efficiency, the study area is divided into three sub-regions using unstructured grid concept. The flow field including tidal elevation and current speed and direction nearby Taipei Harbor was calculated and analyzed for its present condition and different extended layouts in the future. The object of the numerical simulation is to provide valuable information of hydrodynamics for the simulation of ship operation. Changes of flow field for further installation of Taipei Harbor is also estimated to identify the safety of ship motion.
