Summary This study aims to probe the correlation between the economic implications of the transportation statistics and the overall economic development through an analysis of the former, as well as to determine which items of the transportation statistics are correlated with economic well-being. Moreover, a preliminary study on the correlation between the determined items and the overall economic cycle is conducted to increase the application and value of the transportation statistics.

The research method of this study primarily utilizes the 2-stage Least Angle Regression (LARS) to perform a variable selection and investigate the characteristics of the correlation between each individual item of the transportation statistics and the overall economic cycle. The favored cyclical analysis by the Council for Economic Planning and Development is also employed to help with the investigation. The items of "the Number of New Small Vehicle License Applications" (New Passenger Car registrations) and "Tourism" exhibit the leading numbers in the results of the study in the recent data. Regarding "the Number of New Small Vehicle License Applications", as it does not meet the criteria of the index, it is relatively difficult to formulate its relevant policies. In the "Tourism" aspect, creating an accommodating environment for sightseeing and its related measures, such as enhancing the transportation services and investing in basic infrastructure, are suggested to attract more tourists. These measures will provide a substantial push to increase the volume of business in the domestic transportation, accommodation, food & beverage, retail and other related industries.
