Summary | Published in June 2003 IOT SERIAL No.92-65-744,46pp. Taiwan is located in western branch of the Cum-Pacific Seismic Belt, hence earthquakes occurred frequently in Taiwan. Under strong earthquake shaking, the liquefaction of sandy soils of alluvium and reclaimed lands in western coastal area of Taiwan may occur and cause damages to coastal and harbor facilities at this area. This project is divided into five subprojects: (1) Seismic Wave and Excess Porewater Pressure Monitoring at Taichung Harbor Area (2) The Study for Local Models of Liquefaction and the Risk of Liquefaction at Harbor Areas (3) A study on soil structure of Taichung Harbor Area (4) Measures against Liquefaction and Ground Improvement at Harbor Area and (5) Ground Subsidence Monitoring of Harbor Areas. In the first subproject, the ground surfaced and embedded seismographers and piezometers were installed in Taichung harbor area. In the second subproject, we collected 174 CPT data sets and 288 SPT data sets of liquefaction and non-liquefaction cases from Chi-Chi earthquake. Some local models for evaluating liquefaction potential using CPT data and SPT data were established in this study. In the third subproject, geophysical methods are conducted to investigate the soil speed structure. H/V ratios from microtremor measurements were used to study the site effect of Taichung harbor area. In the fourth subproject, methods of soil improvement for measures against liquefaction of soils were summarized and their mechanisms of improvement were analyzed. Applicable methods of soil improvement for local soil conditions at harbor area and guides for design and construction of these methods were proposed. In the fifth subproject, observation wells with depth of 200m to monitor subsidence and groundwater pressure were set up in Taichung harbor, Pudai harbor, Anpeng harbor and Tapeng Bay. |
