Summary | Many cities in Taiwan recently have implemented the automatic vehicle location (AVL) and smart card system for bus fleets. Analyzing Big Data generated by both systems, along with route data, driver data and schedule data, will help the transit agencies to monitor and manage public transit. In this project, we interviewed transit agencies of central and local government to summarize their requirements of Big Data to facilitate the management of bus fleets. Other than realizing the demand of transit agencies, this project also studies previous relevant research, in order to identify the boundaries of this research.
In this project,we focus on mining and visualizing the following three Big Data: 1.Automatic vehicle location data from intercity and city bus’s advanced public transportation system (including steady and dynamic data) 2.Management data from bus companies.(including driver’s performance, vehicle’s oil consumption ) 3.Smard card data We used data fusion technique to develop several dashboards that help transit agencies analyse the service levels of their bus fleets. This was done for the transit system in Taichung city, located in central Taiwan. Several practical examples are presented in this paper, which could offer precise information for decision makers of transit agencies, instead of relying on professional judgement. With user-friendly dashboards, our experience of using visualization to monitor the overall transit performance can easily be applied to other cities. |
