| Summary | Published in April 2004 IOT SERIAL No. 93-39-295, 108pp. The basic highway data includes all the characteristics and attributes of the infrastructures and traffic control facilities. A comprehensive highway database is basic tool for the planning, management and maintenance of transportation system. The Institute of Transportation has been conducting a series of projects to develop a highway inventory data collection system with the photo logging technology since 2000, which is an integration of digital camera, digital odometer, and Global Position System (GPS) receiver. With the establishment of the highway inventory database, the highway inventory data can be managed and maintained in a more efficient and effective way. In 2000, a prototype of data collection system and data management system was developed with field study. Based on this study, the storage of the highway inventory data and the images of roadside environment of 1600 kilometers long provincial and county highway in the North Taiwan were stored into the highway inventory database in the following two years. In these two studies, the suitability of the system in hardware, software and interface were tested. The system is than modified to upgrade its function and manipulability based on the results of this study. The purpose of this study is to re-evaluate the function of the current system and equipments based on the results of the previous studies. Efforts were devoted to upgrade the data collection equipments, technology and process to increase data collection efficiency and quality. The database structure was modified to upgrade its function such that data can be updated and retrieved more smoothly. In addition, the storage of the highway inventory data and the images of roadside environment of 1200 kilometers long provincial and county highway in Central Taiwan was completed based on the new data collection system. |
