Summary Existing taximeters are installed to calculate only one tariff, and cannot provide different tariffs in different operating areas. Receipt printing function is also currently unavailable in existing taximeters and some functions are still needed, including integration of administrative procedures, preventing false taxi charges, and improving operating management. Moreover, several problems has to be solved such as tariff adjustment, receipts printing, and recording of operating data … etc. These problems can cause inconveniences to managers, make supervision difficult, and cause dispute with consumers. Therefore, a new taximeter design is urgently needed.

  Objectives achieved by this project are as follows: (1) examples from around the world were reviewed and used as references for the new taximeter design; (2) system design and functions were established; (3) new functions were defined, including tariff adjustments, input of new tariffs, recording of operating data, data and receipt printing, voice announcement, and system interface; (4) formulated regulations that the new taximeter has to follow; (5) finished the taximeter interface protocol design and function tests; (6) completed the software development and testing of the two main functions; and (7) planned the taximeter implementation strategy and schedule. This project can be used as a reference for future implementation of taxi related policies.
