Summary | Published in September 2003 IOT SERIAL No.92-94-3248,60 pp. Human factors are important in driving safety. Many recent investigations and reports showed that using mobile phone while driving may seriously affect traffic safety. Therefore, a study to examine the use of mobile phone is necessary. In this study, we collected domestic accident records data (from August 1999 to March 2000 September 2001 to February 2003) and analyzed the different results before and after the enforcement of law prohibiting the use of mobile phones while driving, accident types, vehicle types, and two different types of hand-held and hand-free phones. Through statistical analysis, we found that hand-free phone calling during driving had decreased, and that motorbike riders like to use hand-held phones while riding the motorbikes. Hence, driving safety was affected. Consequently, we suggested to publicize and enforce the law prohibiting the use of mobile phones, including hand-free mobile phones. Our conclusions can serve as a legislative reference for the protection of public and individual safety. |
