Summary Travel surveys are regarded as the cornerstones of the forecasting accuracy of transportation demand models. The previous island-wide intercity travel survey was conducted 10 years ago in 2005. Although supplementary travel surveys have been conducted since then by using secondary data, the trip characteristics may have considerably changed with new transportation policies, socioeconomic developments, and changes in transportation supply in recent years. In order to ensure the forecasting capability of the 5th Taiwan Area Comprehensive Transportation Demand Model, a national travel survey covering Taiwan, Penghu, Kinmen and Matsu was carried out in 2014.

The research outcomes are summarized as follows:

In general, the ridership of public transport has continued to increase, while the number of car trips on freeways remains at a level of approximately 1.2 million per day.
Phone interviews were adopted for the national travel survey. A total of 549,000 phone calls were made and 32,620 respondents were willing to be surveyed. The overall response rate was approximately 5.9%. Among all the respondents, approximately 64.9% made short trips within the metropolitan area living circle, whereas the other 35.1% crossed the living circle boundaries for intercity travel.
According to the study, the trip characteristics on weekdays and weekends show that:
(1) Intercity trip-makers travel mainly between the Taipei, Taoyuan, Taichung, and Kaohsiung metropolitan areas. The trip purposes are primarily visiting friends and leisure. (2) Trip characteristics are considerably different on “Monday and Friday,” “Tuesday to Thursday,” and “weekends.” The trips on Mondays and Fridays are primarily work trips with notably high ridership on intercity buses. The trips on Tuesdays and Thursdays are primarily business trips, with high ridership on high-speed rail. Weekend trips are primarily for leisure and visiting friends, with travel distances notably longer than those occurring on weekdays. (3) As the trip length increases, the percentage of riders taking faster methods of transportation climbs. (4) Private vehicles are the main method of transportation in all trip length classes in the cross-living-circle travel market.
