Summary | Published in April 2004 IOT SERIAL No. 93-71-7104, 64pp. Whether or not carriers choose Kaohsiung as their transshipment port would influence the transshipment business of the Port of Kaohsiung. Therefore, this study was to review some related papers about ship routing and port decision, analyze the future trend about the development of marine container transportation, and discuss the geographic advantage of the Port of Kaohsiung. Meanwhile, the present operation condition of Kaohsiung container terminal will also be explained. Next, to minimize both shipping cost and holding cost for carriers, all costs in a container transportation process were analyzed, a shipping cost function and a holding cost function were constructed. Besides, the mathematical relationship between shipping cost and holding cost was deduced, and a ship size decision problem was analyzed by using the cost functions. Finally, the transshipment cost about container transportation to/from the Port of Manila was examined, and the suitable port of transshipment for different frequency of main line and feeder line was deduced. |
