Summary | Published in April 2004 IOT SERIAL No. 93-24-690, 368pp. Traditionally roadway planning & design mainly serve to enhance the mobile vehicle efficiencies and to improve traffic safety. Even the engineers usually emphasize the construction results without subsuming the sustainable development concepts. For example, designs such as “Green Transportation” which emphasizes the spirits of environmental protection and humanism, and the “Disability-free Environment” which emphasizes social equality have become the growing universal roadway construction concepts. However, the designers usually ignored the combination of environment and humanity in Taiwan, and the related user requirements. This study focuses on the contents and concepts of roadway sustainable development. In roadway planning and design, all the special requirements for pedestrians, bicycles, motorcycles, public transit and public facilities shall be considered and traffic safety, the recycled materials, and the ecosystem shall be taken into account as well. Integrating the concepts of humanity, disaster prevention, ecology, green construction, this study aims to define the sustainable roadway planning standards and design criteria in Taiwan. To make the rules and regulations that are suitable for local development specialties, relative references regarding roadway design are reviewed and the consequences of the study for native related concepts and methods are analyzed. Besides, the future constructional requirements are also thoroughly considered. |
