Summary Hong Kong used to play a very important role in the shipping business across the Taiwan Straits. This study is concentrated on the changes in the economic and trade situation, port operation & management and future development strategy of Hong Kong after 1997. Hong Kong suffered from the economic recession in the year 1997 under the impact of Asia financial crisis. The port operation did not suffer the same recession as the economic situation of Hong Kong. Analysis shows that under the strategy of Mainland China, Hong Kong still maintains its hub position in the sea transportation after 1997. The factors associated with the return to Mainland China have little impact on the port operation of Hong Kong. The port operation will be deeply affected by the future development of the Mainland Chinese ports nearby Hong Kong, offshore shipping center of Kaohsiung and direct shipping across the Taiwan Strait. The development of the nearby ports, such as Yentian , Sekou in Mainland China will be the major threat to Hong Kong.  The offshore shipping center of Kaohsiung opened in April 1997 had already attracted certain volume of transshipment container boxes from Hong Kong. The future direct shipping across the Taiwan Strait will have even greater impact on Hong Kong.  After 1997 the Mainland Chinese regards the shipping between Taiwan and Hong Kong as" route of special zones", the government of R.O.C. regards Hong Kong as the "zone of the third party". The change of the political situation did not affect the shipping business between Taiwan and Hong Kong, so the port operation of the ports in Taiwan are not affected by the return of Hong Kong. From the annual throughput of transshipment containers in the offshore shipping center shows that port of Kaohsiung is in a good niche position to compete with Hong Kong. If other integrated measures could be incorporated to improve the operation efficiency of the offshore shipping center, more containers will be attracted to this center. After the opening of direct shipping across the Taiwan Strait, the ports in Taiwan will certainly be benefited from the increase of the transshipment cargo and the escalation of economic and trade relation between the Strait.
