Summary | Taiwan’s economy is a type of island economy that is, the national trade of this island depends on marine transportation. Therefore, long-term development of ports is especially necessary for national economic development. The study reviews the past development of Taiwan ports in which the loading and unloading works progressed with the packing technology. In the earlier time, cargos were packed in general/bulk, which demanded a lot of stevedores. After the invention of container and crane, the productivity of a port was dramatically lifted. Now comes the productivity era of port operation! Container throughput of Kaohsiung port was almost the same as Hong-Kong port’s and Singapore’s in that period of time following with national industrial growth and scientific technique promotion and management skill progress, port competition is much more drastic. Kaohsiung port container throughput was below Hong Kong port and Singapore port in 1980s. Then world port development was evolved to competitive period in the meantime, our national ports develop from concentrating on volume shifts to cargo value and quality. To pave the way for its development to improve port operation, the challenges of port development has to be faced. All these issues are thoroughly examined in the study, and strategies for improvement are supplied with the purpose of promoting port competition advantage. |
