Summary | All the characteristics and attributes of the infrastructures and traffic control facilities of the existing highway are stored in the highway inventory database, which provides basic information for the planning, management and maintenance of transportation system. The data is recorded and updated in booklets manually by highway authorities. Unlike a computerized database, it is hard for users to retrieve information. In addition, with the inefficiency of the current system to provide any image information of the roadside environment, for anyone interested in the condition of the roadside environment, the only way to get this information is a field inspection. In this project, a prototype of photologging system based on Geographic Information System (GIS) is developed, which is integrated with digital camera, digital odometer, and Global Position System (GPS) receiver. The basic functions of the system include surveying, editing, retrieving the images and elementary attributes of highway inventory data and roadside environment. With this new tool, the highway inventory data and the images of roadside environment can be collected and maintained in a more efficient and effective way by highway authorities. Besides, the images of roadside environment can also be applied in Advanced Traveler Information Systems (ATIS) as important information in travel planning and route guidance. |
