Summary Due to the fact that rail transportation system is more efficient and has less impact on the environment, it is essential to promote rail transportation systems in Taiwan for its limited land with high population. Although rail transportation has high social benefits, it requires an enormous capital expenditure. In order to provide a service that complies with predetermined quality of service under the most cost-effective conditions, it is necessary to analyze the capacity of a rail system during any of planning, design, and operation stages.
This study is the following project of “Rail Capacity Research – Rail Capacity Model for the TRA System (1)”. Based on the results of the previous research, a rail capacity model for regional rail, in terms of the number of passengers per hour, is developed in this study to examine and evaluate the capacity of the TRA system. A simplified capacity model evolved from the previous research is also proposed in this study for easy applications. Some parameters for capacity analysis are collected by field survey and fare collection records in this study. The result of this project is an essential part in the series of rail capacity research for regional rail systems. It will be further used to evaluate the future improvement plan of the infrastructure for TRA.
In order to complete capacity research for regional rail, a GUI-based program for capacity analysis and the study of “Level of Services” is required in the successive researches.
