The traffic accident GIS (Geographical Information System) database is part of the sustainable transportation information system, developed as a decision support tool for governmental authorities in traffic safety policy assessment, highway management, and regional development. In this research, we first investigate the feasibility of integrating current accident database and GIS system. In city areas, street address database was mainly used to “geocode” the accident location, while the linear referencing method adopting milepost was used in the highway system. Once accident location was geocoded, GIS functions of traffic accident analysis, such as buffering and overlaying, were then utilized to identify the high accident rate location, area, or road segment. Outcomes of this research include
Accident database design and analysis

Traffic accident analysis using GIS functionalities, such as buffering, overlaying, and linear referencing method

Identification of high accident rate road section
Adopting OpenGIS architecture and Web services to provide the interoperability cross platform.
