Summary | The offshore shipping service between Taiwan and its offshore islands is a vital facility to maintain the living quality of the island’s inhabitants.
Most of the shorter shipping routes with large amounts of tourists are operated by private sectors. Those longer routes with fewer tourists are operated by the government sectors with a large amount of annual subsidy to compensate for the heavy operation loss. Under the severe competition of other carriers, the escalation of the passenger amount and ticket price is very difficult. Unless the exploration of the other passenger sources is successful, the financial deficit of the shipping routes in the public sector will be inevitable. Under the prosperous development of the direct aviation service between the Strait and other restrictions imposed on the seaborne traffic, it will be difficult for the offshore seaborne passenger service to be extended to Mainland China to attract potential passengers. The standard operation procedure for the renewal of the ship and typical financial analysis model are proposed in this study and provided as references for the future evaluation of the operation and management of offshore shipping services. |
