Summary The Taiwan Area Comprehensive Transportation Planning has been our (Institute of Transportation, IOT) focus for many years. By yearly data collections and model updating every five years, it enhances the reality verification and uncertainty examination. Moreover, we can re-calibrate model parameters in time through this information, make this model a more reliable predictor and provide the development orientation for future intercity transportation systems, the reference for comprehensive transportation planning and policy legislation as well.

The fourth intercity transportation demand model was completed in 2008. It serves as tools to forecast the demand of intercity transportation, analysis of the sensitivity of different policies and plans, and the influence and sustainability of transportation development projects; the fifth intercity transportation demand model would review the fourth intercity transportation demand model, using current data to examine the accuracy of different passenger/freight analytical modules, in order to suggest future adjustments or improved methods.

This study, a two-year plan during 2009 and 2010, is a pre-research of the fifth intercity transportation demand model. It completed the intercity travel survey to observe recent change of intercity market share, and discussed the relationship between socio-economic development and transportation demand/supply. This study focuses on the analysis as follows:

future socio-economic development,
influence of significant development projects,
service condition of transportation systems,
influence of socio-economic and transportation issues on travel behavior,
feasibility study of joint land use model and travel model,
intercity travel survey

The result can be used for future transportation supply/demand forecasting and evaluation. Accordingly, we can examine and review the transportation development orientation and sensitivity of policy and strategies; furthermore, we can draw up future development orientation and the priority of intercity transportation systems. Finally, the result is suggested as a reference for MOTC and related authorities to examine construction plans.
