Driving simulator is a very good research tool in the study of traffic safety. It is used to investigate the relationships among human being, car, and road systems. The research of driving simulator has been undergone through three steps of development since August 1997 in Institute of Transportation (IOT), MOTC. The results are satisfied in developing driving simulator in Taiwan. In order to conduct more experiments by using the driving simulator, the simulator is going to be moved into IOT, and we also extend its software and hardware designs. The main task items in this project includes: (1) the establishment of a driving simulator laboratory: space planning, hardware movement, eight-screen visual system design, and three-projector system establishment, (2) the extension and improvement of the driving simulator: force feedback in accelerator, break and steering wheel
LVDS modified with washout algorithm, and flexible parameter setting, (3) system verification: the assessment of platform reaction, supervising system, VR calculating efficiency, and the experiments of sign recognition, reaction distance of breaking alarm, and (4) application research: the study of “the driving behaviors of the elder drivers” and “the behaviors of car-following” with an interesting and interactive environment and experimental design.
