| Summary | The portion of the containers handled by the container terminal operators has been increasing in recent years the top ten terminal operators have their own global deployment plans. The intensive investment of the container facilities in Mainland China is a global focus. In order to realize this development trend, this study investigates and analyzes the distribution of the handling capacities of the existing facilities and future projects of the major shipping lines and large-scale container terminal operators in Mainland China and Asia-Pacific region. Based on the analysis result of the development trend of the international market, the current situation regarding the local container operation and the future development of the nearby competitive ports, this study proposes incentives and measures to attract the potential terminal operators to invest and participate in the container handling business in Taiwan. This study finds out that the relationships among the terminal operators become much more complex than they were in the past. The portion of the containers handled by the shipping line oriented terminal operators is increasing. The major terminal operators have already invested in the ports along the coastline of Mainland China. After the opening of direct shipping across the Strait, adjusting the organization structure of the port authorities to increase the operation flexibility and promoting the Free Trade Port to increase the port throughput will play a very important role in attracting the transshipment volume from the nearby smaller Mainland China Ports. The above measures to increase the traffic volume & value of the local ports are the key factors to attract the global terminal operators to invest in the local container terminals. This study has collected and set up the basic data of the major terminal operators, operation status of the Mainland China ports and local container terminals. These data could be used as references for the business promotion for the port authority and related government agencies. |
