This research extends the contents of image database system of previous project, ‘Development of digital image database of Taiwan harbors and coast region’. The results of this research are high-resolution coastal images and 3D coastal models constructed by virtual-reality technology along the northwest, northeast and east coast of Taiwan from Taichung Harbor through Suao, Hualian Harbors to Hernchun.

This research also develops a multi-resolution Level of detail (LOD) digital terrain model construction method as well as a fast terrain walkthrough algorithm. However, the size of large scale or densely sampled DEM data can easily exceed the capabilities of typical graphics hardware and thus make interactive real-time applications difficult, such as flight-simulation trainer or artificial sensor simulator. Nowadays graphics hardware technologies, the methods of view frustum culling and view dependent continuous level of detail, were used to reduce the rendering complexity. The software algorithm focuses on reducing the number of triangles, the complexity of terrain model and minimum error metric. More fundamental than the ROAM algorithm itself is the dynamic mesh representation based on triangle binary-trees. The management of real-time geometry refinement, textures, LOD blocks, view-dependent culling, and error metrics elimination are handled by high frame-rate and efficient memory paging technologies. These methods can handle larger datasets as well as making interactive terrain walkthroughs on PC platform possible with appropriate hardware acceleration.
