| Summary | Because of the complex interactions between traffic flow, control measures and geometric design of signalized intersections, the development and application of analytical procedures for capacity analysis of signalized intersections face serious limitations. Computer simulation can overcome many weaknesses associated with analytical modeling. To promote the development and use of computer simulation, the IOT published a manual on capacity analysis of signalized intersections in 1998. This manual discusses the fundamentals of analyzing the capacities and levels of service of signalized intersections and presents a simulation-based methodology for capacity analysis. The simulation model described in this manual is the Urban Traffic Systems Simulation (UTSS) model. In 2000, the input data structure of the UTSS mdel was simplified and the aforementioned manual was revised to expand its range of applications. The results of these modifications are documented herein. |
