  The amendment,1995 to the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW),1978 was translated into Chinese and published in September 1996.

  The amendments which were adopted by the IMO Maritime Safety Committee (MSC) at its sixty-eighth session(May/June 1997) by resolutions MSC.66(68), MSC.67(68) became effective on 1 January 1999 and are called amendment 1(1997).

  The amendments to part A (mandatory) of the Seafarers’ Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW) Code were adopted by the Maritime Safety Committee at its 70th session (December 1998) by resolution MSC.78(70) and became effective under the tacit acceptance procedure on 1 January 2003 and are called amendment 2(2001).

  At its 69th and 72nd sessions, the MSC also adopted amendments to part B (non-mandatory) of the STCW Code. These amendments were promulgated in two circulars, STCW. 6/Circ.3 and STCW.6/Circ. 5, and became effective on 20 May 1998 and 26 May 2000, respectively.

  Also included are various updates to references and footnotes introduced by the MSC’s Sub-Committee on Standards of Training and Watchkeeping (STW) at its 31st session (January 2000).

  These amendments need to be translated into Chinese and integrated into the STCW Code for reference.
